Can you watch the sunset at Sao Beach? You get beautiful late-afternoon light, but the sun does not set over the sea. The beach is on the south-east coast and faces east, so the sun goes down behind the island. In return, it is one of Phu Quoc’s best sunrise beaches.

- January–February: about 18:02–18:14.

The best hours at Sao Beach
Sunrise (about 5:45–7:00): the sun comes up over the sea, the water is glassy and the beach is empty. Golden hour (60–90 minutes before sunset): low light from behind you warms the white sand and palms. This is the busiest time for photos. To see the sun drop into the sea, drive to the west coast, for example Dinh Cau in Duong Dong (30–45 minutes by car). Leave earlier in November and December.
Where to stand
- At the water’s edge: clear shallows, and silhouettes against the sunrise.
- By the leaning palms and the swing: frame the three shades of blue.
- On the wooden jetty: use it as a leading line and shoot low.
- At either end of the beach: quieter, with fewer people in the frame.
Phone photo tips
- Lock exposure on the bright sky and pull the brightness down slightly.
- Use HDR, no flash, and wipe salt spray and sunscreen off the lens.
- Keep shooting for 10–15 minutes after the sun disappears.
