Sao Beach (Bãi Sao) is on Phu Quoc’s south-east coast. Its curve of fine white sand runs for more than 7 km, and the water is clear and calm for most of the year (Vietnam National Authority of Tourism). Here is what you need before you go.
Where it is and how long it takes
- From Duong Dong: about 25 km, roughly 30–45 minutes by car.
- From Phu Quoc airport: about 25–40 minutes by car.
- From An Thoi: about 7 km.
You can take a taxi or Grab, rent a scooter, or book a SAO PHU QUOC transfer. Airport pick-ups need at least 3 hours’ notice, and groups can book 16-, 29- or 45-seat coaches. See Getting to Sao Beach.
Best season and best hour
The dry season (November to April) is best for swimming and boat trips. In the rainy season (May to October) showers are usually short and come in the afternoon, mornings stay sunny, and the east coast is often calmer than the west. Around 7 am the sea is almost flat and the beach is quiet. Late afternoon turns the sand golden. The beach faces east, so it is a sunrise beach and the sun sets behind the island. What to do
- Swim in shallow water with a gentle slope. There are lifeguards and a family area.
- Rent loungers with drinks and a fruit platter, or book a private cabana.
- Have a seafood lunch on the sand: sea bass or sea bream, grilled or steamed, and grilled squid (seasonal).
- Try jet skiing and parasailing (the Ocean Thrill package).
- Add a speedboat or diving trip: see Speedboat & diving.
- In the evening, have dinner at Gánh Ngon, 113 Trần Hưng Đạo, Duong Dong (open 6:30 am to 2:00 am).

What to bring
Bring sunscreen (the midday sun is strong even when it’s cloudy), flip-flops, swimwear and a light layer for the evening breeze. If you have a cabana booking, arrive about 15 minutes early.

Do I need to book ahead?
Book at least 1 day ahead at weekends and in high season (November to April). You can also buy at the counter if places are left.

Can I cancel?
Changes and cancellations are free with 24 hours’ notice. Cabanas, glamping and groups of 10 or more need a 30% deposit.
